Serving in Hope

Brief History of the society

SSVP is an International Lay Catholic Organization which was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a 20 year old University Student in Paris France, who challenged Catholics to put “THEIR FAITH INTO ACTION”. Frederic named the Society after St Vincent de Paul, who was Named by Pope Leo XIII as “THE PATRON SAINT OF CHARITY”. Frederic’s companion, Dr. Joseph Painchaud, established the Society in Canada in 1846 in Quebec City.

The St. Columbkille Conference of the Society has been in operation since October 2007. This year (2022) will celebrated 15 Years of Service.

what we do

In addition to operating the soup kitchen (11:30 – Noon, Saturday, Sunday, & Monday), SSVP also does home visits. Through “Home Visits” we respond to critical situations of need. We work in co-operation with other agencies to avoid duplication of services.

We are solely dependent upon monetary donations and canned food drives.  All monies & donation go directly to those persons in need of Pembroke and Area.

volunteers

SSVP Pembroke is run by volunteers, no paid staff. We have touched many lives and have assisted many folks with the helping hands of solid and committed Volunteers. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and faith.

How can you assist?

  • By volunteering some hours
  • By organizing a “Canned Food Drive”
  • By gathering monies ….perhaps some kind of fundraiser
  • By joining and adding a New Gift to our Society
